Birth and Early Life:
William Sanders was raised in Cordele, Georgia.

Enlistment and Boot Camp:
Sanders enlisted on July 19, 1940; he attended boot camp at Parris Island, was retained as an instructor for several months, and then was sent to Sea School at Norfolk Navy Yard.

Wartime Service:
Sanders joined the Marine detachment of the cruiser USS Quincy early in 1941, and sailed with them on training and escort missions until the start of the war. After a voyage to Iceland and a refit in New York, Sanders’ ship was sent to the Pacific, where they participated in the first days of the Guadalcanal campaign.

Date Of Loss:
PFC Sanders was lost at sea when the Quincy was sunk at the battle off Guadalcanal in the early morning of August 9, 1942, during the battle of Savo Island.
