Birth and Early Life:
Stefano and Anna Cucci welcomed their eighth child in 1921. Gerard Cucci – known as “Jerry” – was raised in Jersey City, experienced the loss of his father in 1932, and left home for the Marines at the age of twenty.

Enlistment and Boot Camp:
After enlisting on August 18, 1941, Cucci was sent to Parris Island, and then to Sea School at Norfolk Navy Yard.

Wartime Service:
Private Cucci joined the USS Vincennes at New York in January, 1942. He saw action in the battle of Midway, and during the landings on Guadalcanal when his cruiser supported the Marine landings and fought off Japanese air attacks on August 7-8.

Date Of Loss:
Jerry Cucci was killed on the morning of August 9, 1942, when his cruiser was sunk at the battle of Savo Island. His remains were never found.
