Private First Class Daniel Lloyd Gauntt

Birth and Early Life:
Little is known of Daniel Gauntt’s life before he joined the Marine Corps in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Enlistment and Boot Camp:
Gauntt enlisted on January 31, 1942, and trained at Parris Island, South Carolina.

Wartime Service:
In the spring of 1942, Gauntt was promoted to Private First Class and assigned to Headquarters and Service Company, Fifth Marines as a member of the regimental intelligence section. He trained through the summer and landed on Guadalcanal on August 7.

Date Of Loss:
PFC Gauntt was killed in action on the morning of August 13, 1942, when the patrol led by Colonel Frank Goettge was ambushed and pinned down on a beach near Guadalcanal’s Matanikau River. His remains were never recovered.

Status Of Remains:
Buried on Guadalcanal

Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Philippines.
