Birth and Early Life:
James Walters was from Syracuse, New York. He was born in 1918 to Harry and Ruth Walters, and grew up at 201 Fillmore Avenue.

Enlistment and Boot Camp:
Walters joined the Marine Corps Reserve on January 21, 1942. He trained at Parris Island, and was posted to Company B, First Battalion, Seventh Marines after boot camp.

Wartime Service:
Walters was made a PFC on April 10, 1942, as his company sailed for American Samoa aboard the USS Fuller. Though the regiment was ready for action, they would instead spend the next several months performing garrison and guard duty in Samoa – for untested troops, this duty soon became boring.

Prayers for action were answered in September, 1942 as the 7th Marines boarded transports and sailed for Guadalcanal, where they would reinforce the First and Fifth Marines. Walters set foot on Guadalcanal on September 18, and spent the next few days getting a firsthand lesson in life under fire.

Date Of Loss:
Walters was killed on September 24, 1942. His battalion had run into strong enemy resistance while patrolling near the Matanikau River; when A/1/7 was pinned down by hidden machine guns, Walters’ Company B was hastily sent forward to help – a decision that took the lives of four of them, and wounded a handful more.

James Walters was buried in the jungle near the Matanikau; in the months following the fight, the location of his grave was lost.

Next Of Kin:
Father, Mr. Harry J. Walters.

Status Of Remains:
Buried on Guadalcanal

Memorial:
Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Philippines.
