Birth and Early Life:
Charles Dombroski was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania in 1921; he was part of a large blue-collar family raised by Charles and Brona Dombroski. No other information is available about his early life.

Enlistment and Boot Camp:
After enlisting on January 13, 1942, Dombroski was sent to Parris Island for training. His first assignment after boot camp was to Company F, Second Battalion, 5th Marines, then stationed at New River, North Carolina.

Wartime Service:
Private Dombroski served with F/2/5 from New River to California; he crossed the Pacific to New Zealand, received his baptism of fire at Tulagi on August 7, 1942, and saw his first pitched battle at Guadalcanal’s Bloody Ridge the following month. He was approaching “old hand” status when his battalion was ordered out into the jungle, where they would locate and aid a battalion of the 7th Marines that had run into trouble along the Matanikau River.

Date Of Loss:
Charles Dombroski was killed in action as his battalion attempted to force its way across the Matanikau on the afternoon of September 26, 1942. No details are available as to the circumstances of his death, or the disposition of his remains.
