Brief Break

As September, 1942 drew to a close, Marine leaders had much to ponder. The Japanese still controlled most of Guadalcanal, sailed with relative impunity through its waters, and mounted regular air raids each day. The latest offensives that comprised the Second Battle of the Matanikau had ended in disaster; the First Battalion, 7th Marines had lost nearly a tenth of its personnel in less than two weeks on the island. The commanders knew they could not pause for long, but did not want to waste lives needlessly. A new strategy was needed, and soon – the offensive would continue in October.

MissingMarines.com will be going on a brief hiatus to make time for updates to the sister site,  First Battalion, 24th Marines.

If you have any urgent comments, questions, or research requests, please contact me at webmaster@ablecompany24.com.

We’ll return soon with the story of PFC Walter Pat Anderson, who died as a prisoner of war on October 1, 1942.

Semper Fi,

Geoffrey
