CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS
First Lieutenant Andrew Jackson was a pilot assigned to VMSB-132, a Marine dive-bomber squadron based at Espiritu Santo in the summer of 1943.

On 9 June 1943, Jackson and radioman SSgt. Thomas J. Quinn participated in a training flight over Turtle Bay near Espiritu Santo. In the vicinity was a photo-recon fighter piloted by 2Lt. Robert C. Hanckel, Jr. The Wildcat and the Dauntless crossed paths and collided around 900 hours. All three Marines – Jackson, Quinn, and Hanckel – were killed in the mishap; none of the bodies were recovered.
