On 7 October 1942, the Second Battalion, 5th Marines was ordered to occupy a sector along the eastern bank of the Matanikau River and create a convincing diversion, drawing Japanese attention away from a crossing in force further upstream.

The battalion suffered only one fatality in the day’s operation: Ed Ciazinski was killed in action by gunshot wounds. The location of his field burial was recorded in his service record book, but the site could not be located after the war.
