On 7 October 1942, the Marines renewed their offensive against Japanese forces positioned along the Matanikau River. The Second Battalion, 5th Marines was ordered to occupy a sector of the eastern river bank and create a convincing diversion, drawing Japanese attention away from the real crossing site further upstream.

The battalion suffered only one fatality in the day’s operation. PFC Edward Ciazinski of E/2/5, who had been wounded in an earlier attack along the Matanikau, was killed in action by gunshot wounds. The location of his field burial was recorded in his service record book, but the site could not be located after the war.
