CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS
On 13 January 1943, the First Battalion, 8th Marines launched an offensive along the north coast of the island. During the course of the day, they encountered numerous well-armed Japanese troops in ravines and fortified positions.

Private Jack Diamond and PFC Eugene W. Wade were killed in action at 0900; both men were shot in the head and buried where they fell. Neither Marine’s remains could be located after the war, and they are both still unaccounted for.
