CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS PFC Marion E. George was a member of the Marine detachment aboard the cruiser USS Houston. He served aboard the cruiser alongside his Navy brother, Perlie George Junior. When Japanse warships sank the Houston off the coast of Java on 1 March 1942, Perlie George managed to escape. He was picked up by Japanese forces and survived years of captivity as a prisoner of war. He eventually returned home, but did so alone. Marion was still missing, and it was accepted that he lost his life in the sinking. Marion George’s body was never found, and he was officially declared dead on 15 December 1945. |

Marion Elmer George was my great uncle. He was no relation to Kelton George, but his brother, Perlie M. George, was also on the USS Houston at the time it was sunk. Perlie M. George was my grandfather and survived WWII.

I want to confirm that Kelton B. George was no relation to Marion and Perlie. Kelton’s had one sibling, his sister Sara Sue George who married Victor Davis about 5 years following the loss of her brother.
