Private First Class William Long, a member of Company F, Second Battalion, 7th Marines, was killed in action on 25 October 1942, during the battle of Henderson Field, Guadalcanal.

PFC Long’s body was buried in the field alongside PFC Joseph A. Pawlowskiand the location was dutifully recorded. The burial site was never located after the war; both Marines were declared non-recoverable
