CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS First Lieutenant Hermann J. Schulze was a Marine pilot assigned to VMF-123, a fighter squadron based at Efate in the New Hebrides Islands. During routine strafing practice on 7 May 1943, Schulze was involved in a mid-air collision with squadronmate 1Lt. Laurel G. McDaniel. Both aircraft spun out of control and crashed at sea approximately 20 miles northwest of Havannah Harbor. Neither pilot’s body could be recovered from the scene. |
