CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS
PFC Clarence N. Goowdin was an aviator assigned to VMSB-143, a Marine torpedo bomber squadron stationed at Guadalcanal.

On 19 May 1943, PFC Goodwin’s crew participated in a mine-laying mission to Villa Harbor, Kolombangara. Japanese anti-aircraft fire filled the air, and a shell struck Avenger (TBF-1 06243). The big plane dove into the water and exploded on impact. PFC Goodwin and his crewmates, 1Lt. Robert H. Keim and PFC Donald S. Batchelor, were killed instantly; no trace of their remains could be recovered.
