CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS Second Lieutenant Fred C. Scales was a pilot assigned to VMF-211, a Marine fighter squadron based at Ewa Field, Hawaii in the summer of 1943. Lieutenant Scales died in an accident on 24 June 1943. He departed Ewa in a Corsair (F4U-1 02684) at 1100 hours; a scant 28 minutes later, a patrol boat reported sighting a crash about seven miles north of Barber’s Point. They found no wreckage and saw no trace of the pilot. Scales was posthumously promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant. His body was never recovered. |
