Corporal Harley L. Hofeditz was an aviation radioman and gunner assigned to VMSB-233, a Marine dive-bomber squadron stationed at Henderson Field, Guadalcanal.

On 7 April 1943, Hofeditz and 1Lt. John A. Weber departed Henderson Field to fly cover for a task force departing from Tulagi. A group of Japanese aircraft appeared, and Weber aimed his bomber for the protective cover of a nearby rain cloud just as the ships opened fire.

An hour later, the USS Fletcher discovered the body of Lt. Weber floating in the sea. He had been killed by friendly anti-aircraft fire. No trace of SBD-4 06754 or Corporal Hofeditz was ever found, and the airman was declared dead on 8 April 1944.
