Loss And Burial

Circumstances Of Loss

Joseph Tiberio, a veteran JASCO radio operator, landed at Iwo Jima on 19 February 1945. At some point during his first hours ashore, Tiberio was critically wounded in action. He was treated by a hospital corpsman and brought to an evacuation station on Beach Yellow 2. Unfortunately, his wounds were too severe and Tiberio died while waiting for a boat to take him away from Iwo.

Eyewitnesses reported recognizing Tiberio’s body on a stretcher at the evacuation station on the morning of 20 February 1945, but not thereafter. It is not known what became of the remains after that time; he may have been moved or buried by persons unknown.
