  1. James Coleman Wiseman was my uncle. He is memorialized at Manila American Cemetery, Does this mean his body was never found?

    1. Hi Marty,

Officially, Private First Class Wiseman is listed as missing in action, along with PFC Jewell Wood, from Company E, 2nd Marines on Guadalcanal. I haven’t found any definitive information yet, but it is possible that the two were buried in the field. A graves registration party may have missed them, or recovered them and failed to identify their remains.

If you have any information about your uncle, please contact me at webmaster@ablecompany24.com and I can start looking for other records that may help point to what happened.

      Best,
      Geoff

  2. My uncle is Joseph Francis Smith, died 03 Nov 1942 at Guadalcanal. I was told he was a PFC in the US Marines. Also told he was MIA and with the 2nd Raiders Battalion, 5th Regiment, 1st Division. Found his name on the Tablets of the Missing at Manila American Cemetery, American Battle Monuments Commission ID No. 00332048. At another site, for Raiders, I was told he was NOT with the Raiders. Do you have any information to identify what Unit he was with please? Any additional information you can provide would be much appreciated.
As further information, he enlisted from Massachusetts. I have his birth date and parents names and if you need any additional information, just let me know.
    Best wishes,
    Barbara

    1. Hi Barbara! The Marine Corps muster rolls I looked at indicate that your uncle, PFC Joseph Smith, was with Company F, Second Battalion, 5th Marines. This was not a Raider unit, as you found out, but regular Marine infantry. He and Private Martin Kirschbaum were both killed while fighting along the Matanikau River.
If you’ll email me at webmaster@ablecompany24.com, I can help you get some more information and records to help with your search.

      Cheers!

  3. We are looking for any information about 2nd lieutenant Jesse Leroy Walton of USMC reserves. We think he was with the antiaircraft battalion colored detatchment as a lookout observational post in the south Pacific. He disappeared in a drowning accident while fishing with a fellow officer. The motor quit and they tried to swim to shore. His fellow officer made it but Leroys body was never recovered. We’d like to know details of the island if possible and the date, Abby info is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    1. Hi Denise,

Your account sounds quite right. 2Lt. Jesse Walton drowned on January 25, 1945, off Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. He was on duty with the 51st Defense Battalion (a segregated African American unit) at the time.

If you’ll email me at webmaster@ablecompany24.com, I can help you get Lt. Walton’s service record.

      Best,
      Geoffrey
