CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS Technical Sergeant Lawrence H. Roud was a pilot assigned to VMF-222, a Marine fighter squadron based at Naval Air Station Midway in the summer of 1943. Roud was killed on 19 June 1943, while on a routine flight in a Corsair fighter (F4U-1 02251). At 2030 hours, approximately a half-mile from Midway, his plane suddenly plunged into the sea, exploding on impact and sinking quickly. No trace of the pilot was found, and due to the circumstances of the accident, he was declared dead. |
