CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS First Lieutenant Milton E. Peck was a pilot assigned to VMF-213, a Marine fighter squadron based at Guadalcanal in the summer of 1943. He was a skilled flyer with one Zero to his credit. Lieutenant Peck died in an aviation mishap on 30 June 1943. He was taking off for a routine test flight in F4U-1 #02598 when the engine failed. Peck brought the Corsair down for a water landing off Koli Point, where it floated for several minutes. The pilot was evidently injured or trapped in the cockpit, for he never emerged before the plane sank. Peck was reported as dead on the day of the accident. His body was not recovered. |
