CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS First Lieutenant Ray W. “Billy” Bartlett was a pilot assigned to VMF-212, a Marine fighter squadron based at Naval Air Station Midway in the summer of 1943. Bartlett was killed on 25 July 1943 while flying a Corsair fighter (F4U-1 02275). He was on a routine evening patrol when his aircraft collided with the Corsair flown by his squadronmate, 1Lt. Other F. Smith. Both planes exploded violently in midair, and the wreckage fell into the sea four miles from Midway. Neither Bartlett nor Smith were recovered from the scene of the accident. |
