CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS
Private Raymond H. Martin served with the 90mm group of the 9th Defense Battalion, a heavy anti-aircraft unit stationed in the Solomon Islands.

In the last days of June 1943, the 9th Defense Battalion boarded LST-395 at Guadalcanal and set sail for the western Solomons. They were to follow assault troops ashore on the island of Rendova, set up their heavy guns, and defend against any counterattacks. Martin’s unit was to land on 1 July 1943.

At 0315 on 1 July, the call “man overboard” went up from LST-395. Eyewitnesses reported a Marine who screamed and threw himself over the side, evidently suffering from a nightmare. A headcount disclosed Private Martin’s absence. The ship could not stop to search for him, and Martin drowned at sea.
