CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS Major Robert Philip was a pilot assigned to VMF-111, a Marine fighter squadron based in Samoa during the summer of 1943. Philip was killed in a flying mishap on 24 June 1943. His Wildcat fighter (FM-1 #15003) crashed into the sea at 1030 hours, approximately five miles south of Manono Island. The cause of the accident is not known, and Philip’s body was not recovered from the scene. |
