Circumstances Of Loss

Second Lieutenant Robert W. Horn was a Marine fighter pilot assigned to VMF-323. The squadron was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Parris Island for training prior to overseas deployment.

On the morning of 22 October 1943, pilots of VMF-323 took off for a scheduled gunnery training flight. All aircraft returned except for the one flown by Second Lieutenant Horn. He was last seen on the gunnery range at 0830 hours. Search efforts were unsuccessful, but turned up evidence of a crash at sea. The cause was not determined, but Horn was declared dead on the day of the incident.
