CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS
Captain Thomas Shobbrook was the commanding officer of the 24th Provisional Marine Company, a garrison unit stationed on Johnston Island. He was granted leave in February 1943, and traveled back the the United States for a precious few days.

On 28 March 1943, Captain Shobbrook boarded an Army B-24 in Oahu, bound for Johnston Island. The aircraft ran into a violent storm, and disappeared from friendly radar while 75 miles north of Johnston Island. Rescuers found only an oil slick and some small pieces of floating debris. The entire crew, plus Captain Shobbrook, were assumed to have gone down with the plane.
