CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS
Corporal McCutcheon was reported as missing in action on 8 August 1942, as his company advanced on Guadalcanal. Historian William H. Bartsch writes that McCutcheon passed out while cutting through a kunai grass field, and was “left behind, never to be seen again.”
No trace of McCutcheon was ever identified, and he was declared dead on 9 August 1943.
