Circumstances Of Loss

Frank Hundley, a pre-war China Marin was stationed in the Philippines when the United States entered World War II. He was the NCO in charge of the repair shop that kept the 4th Marines vehicles in good order – but as the campaign for the Philippine Islands progressed, he had fewer and fewer machines to maintain. By late April, Hundley was probably manning a fighting position on Corregidor.

On the night of 5 May 1942, Japanese troops staged an amphibious assault on Corregidor itself. The garrison put up a determined defense, but were simply overwhelmed and finally capitulated at 1200 hours on 6 May. Casualties on both sides were heavy; among the dead was Sergeant Hundley. No specifics of his final moments are currently known.

Burial Information or Disposition
Sergeant Hundley’s body was seen on the battlefield, which served to confirm his death in action. However, no details pertaining to a burial were recorded.

I would like to know who posted this. Frank Hundley was my uncle, my mother was Leona Hundley mentioned in the post. I know a little bit more about him but would like more information, if possible.

I actually didn’t enter this information, but Frank Hundley also had a brother, Harry Hundley Middaugh (he was adopted by Ray and Amy (Hundley) Middaugh. Amy was a sister to Frank and Harry’s father Jesse S. Hundley. Harry grew up in Bottineau County, ND. My husband, whose maternal grandmother was Martha (Mattie) Hundley knew Ray, Amy and Harry very well, and I met Harry a number of times. I have been trying to follow up on the Hundley side of my late husband’s family, so I am interested in you, your mother’s family, and any other information you have on the Hundley’s.
