Circumstances Of Loss
Lewis McIntosh enlisted in the Marine Corps in the summer of 1942, and spent his first year of service with the 13th Defense Battalion at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In October 1943, he was reassigned to the 25th Marines at Camp Pendleton, California – but went absent over leave within a few days. McIntosh was finally apprehended in Phoenix, Arizona, and sent back to Charlie Company, 1/25th Marines, in the spring of 1944.
Private McIntosh went into combat on 15 June 1944, as part of the invasion force tasked with taking the island of Saipan. He was killed there on 4 July 1944. Military records contain no specifics about his final moments or burial, other than to say “whereabouts of remains unknown.”
