Tarawa Cemetery 31

"Isolated Grave 31A & 31B"

Technically “Cemetery 31A” and “Cemetery 31B,” this pair of graves were marked to Private Frank Creasy Kriss and Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class Warren “A.” Talbot. Both men served with the Third Battalion, 6th Marines; Kriss with Item Company, and Talbot with Headquarters. (Talbot, a corpsman, was almost certainly attached to Item Company in combat.) They were killed in action on 23 November 1943, during the final phases of the battle for Tarawa.

The remains of both men were located and identified by the 604th Quartermaster Graves Registration Company. On 3 April 1946, they were buried together in Lone Palm Cemetery – Kriss in Plot 2, Row 10, Grave 9, and Talbot in Grave 10. In 1949, their bodies were returned to their families for final interment.
