Eighteen-year-old Private Robert J. McConachie was killed in action on Okinawa in June, 1945. His body were left on the battlefield until 1987, when a chance find brought six sets of remains to the surface. Two of these were identified as American. Thanks to advancements in mitochondrial DNA testing, Private McConachie was positively identified earlier this year.
He will be buried in Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan, this coming Monday, November 3.
Thanks and congratulations to the team that made this recovery possible, and Semper Fi, Private McConachie.
