Loss And Burial

Circumstances Of Loss

On 19 February 1945, two battalions of the 23rd Marines made assault landings against Iwo Jima’s Beaches Yellow 1 and Yellow 2. In support of the infantry were other branches attached from the Fourth Marine Division’s special troops, including Charlie Company, 4th Pioneer Battalion.

Private Antonio Nassi, a veteran of Saipan and Tinian, was on his way to his third amphibious assault when a shell scored a hit on his landing craft. The fate of others aboard isn’t known, but Nassi was not seen again after the explosion. He was reported as missing in action, and ultimately declared dead on 20 February 1946.
