CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS
Sergeant Charles B. Mellen was an aviation radioman and gunner assigned to VMSB-241, a Marine dive-bomber squadron stationed at Samoa.

On 19 May 1943, Mellen was riding in the rear seat of an SBD “Dauntless” (SBD-4 BuNo 10618). While on a routine flight, and due to unknown causes, the bomber crashed at sea approximately five miles south of Tafuna Airfield at 1820 hours. Neither Sgt. Mellen nor his pilot, 1Lt. Clifford R. Perkins, Jr., could be found after the accident, and both men were declared dead.
