CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS On 19 May 1943, Mellen was riding in the rear seat of an SBD “Dauntless” (SBD-4 BuNo 10618). While on a routine flight, and due to unknown causes, the bomber crashed at sea approximately five miles south of Tafuna Airfield at 1820 hours. Neither Sgt. Mellen nor his pilot, 1Lt. Clifford R. Perkins, Jr., could be found after the accident, and both men were declared dead. |
