First Lieutenant David M. Brennan was a pilot assigned to VMF-122, a Marine fighter squadron based out of Guadalcanal during the summer of 1943.

On 30 June 1943, the “Candystripers” sent eight Corsairs to Rendova in the Western Solomon Islands to help provide air cover for an amphibious landing. They made no contacts, but Lt. Brennan’s engine ran rough, sputtered, and then stopped. He made a successful water landing south of Rendova and his wingman, Lt. Bourgeois, circled over the site as the rest of the flight returned to Guadalcanal.

The next day, Lt. Bourgeois was rescued from Rennel Island. No trace of Lt. Brennan was found, and he was reported as missing in action.
