CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS Sergeant Earl H. Reid was a Marine aviator serving with VMF-211, stationed at Ewa Field, Oahu. On 5 January 1942, Reid boarded an unknown two-seater aircraft piloted by SSgt. Carl N. Vinson and departed Ewa Field for an authorized familiarization flight. At 0942, their plane was seen to fall from the sky and crash at sea approximately 100 yards from Barber’s Point, Oahu. SSgt. Vinson’s body was recovered from the wreckage, but Sgt. Reid’s could not be found – it was presumed that he went down with the plane. |
