CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS
Lieutenant George O. McClain was a pilot assigned to VMSB-243, a Marine dive-bomber squadron stationed at Palmyra Island.

On 11 June 1943, Lt. McClain and Cpl. Wallace G. Wilson were flying an SBD-4 Dauntless bomber attached to Naval Air Station, Palmyra. They were instructed to intercept an incoming PB2Y flying boat. A violent storm with heavy rain forced SBD down, and it crashed at sea some 25 miles from Palmyra. A crash boat was sent to the scene but found only floating wreckage.

Searches continued throughout the day, but no trace of McClain or Wilson was found.
