Lieutenant Gilbert Campbell was a medical officer attached to the Third Battalion, 2nd Marines during the campaign for the Solomon Islands. He treated wounded men on Tulagi and Guadalcanal between August and November 1942.
On 15 November, Campbell was on detached duty from his battalion and aboard an unknown aircraft – possibly R4D-1 #01648 on a routine flight between Guadalcanal and Espiritu Santo. The aircraft went down at sea near Savo Island; Campbell was killed in the crash.
