First Lieutenant Harold E. “Fateye” Gardner was a veteran Marine fighter pilot. After serving a tour over Guadalcanal with VMF-121, he transferred to VMF-122 (the “Candystripers”) and continued flying missions out of Henderson Field.

On 30 June 1943, American forces staged an amphibious landing on Rendova Island in the western Solomons. Gardner took part in an evening fighter sweep that made contact with Japanese aircraft; he did not return to base following the mission. Gardner was reported as missing in action; on 1 July 1945, he was officially declared dead.
