CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS Private Milton W. Schmitt was a member of the Marine detachment aboard the cruiser USS Houston. He served as an orderly for the ship’s commanding officer, Captain Albert H. Rooks. Schmitt was last seen on 1 March 1942, when his ship was sunk in the battle of Sunda Strait. His body was never found, and he was officially declared dead on 15 December 1945. |
