Loss And Burial
Circumstances Of Loss
PFC Nathan Montgomery, a pre-war China Marine, participated in the defense of the Philippine Islands and the siege of Corregidor as a member of Company A, 4th Marines. He suffered slight wounds from an exploding bomb on 1 May 1942 – but with no hope of evacuation and medical facilities stretched to their limit, Montgomery had little choice but to stay on the fighting line.
On the night of 5 May 1942, Japanese forces landed on the island. The garrison put up a stubborn fight, but was overwhelmed and surrendered at 1200 hours the following day. PFC Montgomery was among those killed in the attack; no specifics of his fate are known.
Burial Information or Disposition
At Cabanatuan POW Camp, months after the battle, Corporal Virgil B. Hood Jr. swore to seeing Montgomery’s body on Corregidor. It is not known where the remains were ultimately buried.
