CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS Technical Sergeant Thomas Efstathiou was a pilot assigned to VMF-122, a Marine fighter squadron based on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. Previously, he flew transport aircraft with a utility squadron. On 16 June 1943, VMF-122 sent two flights of Corsairs to intercept a Japanese air armada estimated at 120 fighters and dive bombers. In the lopsided fight that followed, VMF-122 claimed one Zero destroyed, but returned without TSgt. Efstathiou. He was reported as missing in action following the mission. Efstasthiou was declared dead on 17 June 1945. |
