History

Personal Summary

Timothy was born in Des Moines, Iowa on 24 June 1921. His parents were Simon and Margaret Wheeler Casady; Simon died in 1931 when Timothy was just nine years old. Timothy grew up in Des Moines with his mother and older siblings Rose, Simon, and Hortense.

 

Timothy graduated from Lincoln High School in Des Moines with the class of 1939 and attended Iowa State College before joining the service.

Service Details

Casady enlisted in the US Navy on 30 June 1942, passed his elimination flight training, and was sent to Naval Air Training Center Corpus Christi, Texas. He graduated with his gold wings and received a commission as a Marine second lieutenant on 7 April 1943.

 

Casady served briefly in California before deploying to the Pacific and joining VMF-223, a Marine fighter squadron stationed at Midway Island.

Loss And Burial

Second Lieutenant Casady was killed in an accident at 0740 hours, 19 September 1943.

 

While piloting an F4U-1 Corsair (Bureau Number 02271) on a combat tactics training flight, Casady entered a spin and was unable to recover. His plane hit the water about five miles east of Midway and disappeared from view. Casady was not seen to exit the fighter before the crash, and was reported as dead the day of the accident.

News was sent to his mother, Margaret, who was living at 2706 Heliotrope Drive, Des Moines, Iowa.
