CIRCUMSTANCES OF LOSS On 19 May 1943, Perkins was at the controls of an SBD “Dauntless” (SBD-4 BuNo 10618). While on a routine flight, and due to unknown causes, the bomber crashed at sea approximately five miles south of Tafuna Airfield at 1820 hours. Neither Lt. Perkins nor his radioman/gunner, Sergeant Charles B. Mellen, could be found after the accident, and both men were declared dead. |
