Loss And Burial

Circumstances Of Loss

The Third Battalion, 26th Marines continued their forward assault on Iwo Jima during 25 February 1945. Although the high ground in their sector was “easily taken,” the supporting 21st Marines faced stiffer resistance and fell back, leaving the right flank exposed. “Orders were received to hold the ground already gained,” noted the battalion’s Action Report. “After dark, under an artillery cover, lines were reorganized by placing all companies and reserve units in the line…. LT 326 was in an extremely unfavorable position. Supply and evacuation were difficult. Enemy fire, small arms, mortar and artillery fire were very heavy and accurate.”

Private Harvey Garlitz was one of several Item Company Marines killed during the day’s action. His absence was noticed on the morning of 26 February, and he was reported as missing in action. However, an eyewitness report from Private Morris H. Shelton soon corrected the record. Shelton recalled seeing Garlitz and another Marine taking shelter in a foxhole just before a shell scored a direct hit. Both men were killed; Shelton said that Garlitz died from the concussive effects of the blast.

While the name of the other Marine is not known for certain, it is probable that Item Company machine gunner PFC Raymond R. Viale was killed with Garlitz. A BARman, PFC Robert L. Harrison, is also missing from the company as of this date.
