Loss And Burial

Circumstances Of Loss

The Third Battalion, 26th Marines continued their forward assault on Iwo Jima during 25 February 1945. Although the high ground in their sector was “easily taken,” the supporting 21st Marines faced stiffer resistance and fell back, leaving the right flank exposed. “Orders were received to hold the ground already gained,” noted the battalion’s Action Report. “After dark, under an artillery cover, lines were reorganized by placing all companies and reserve units in the line…. LT 326 was in an extremely unfavorable position. Supply and evacuation were difficult. Enemy fire, small arms, mortar and artillery fire were very heavy and accurate.”

PFC Raymond Viale was one of several Item Company Marines killed during the day’s action. His absence was noticed on the morning of 26 February, and he was reported as missing in action. No conclusive details of his death are currently known – however, fellow Item Company machine gunner Private Harvey M. Garlitz vanished under similar circumstances. A witness stated that Garlitz and another Marine were killed by a mortar shell landing directly in their foxhole. It is possible that Viale and Garlitz were members of the same unfortunate MG squad.

PFC Viale was listed as missing through April 1945. Evidence confirming his death was eventually received, but nothing concerning a possible burial.
